Patient Story – Baxter

BAXTER

Baxter is a gentle Hungarian Vizsla of almost 15 years of age. He belongs to one of our own vets, Laura.

Last month, he suddenly became very unwell at home and was found collapsed. He was brought straight to the vets, where he was triaged by our experienced team of nurses, and had diagnostic blood tests, xrays and an ultrasound scan of his heart and abdomen. The results of these tests showed that Baxter had an acute and severe form of pancreatitis.

This is a condition in which the pancreas becomes very inflamed. It is a very painful condition that can be life threatening. Baxter received treatment in the form of IV fluids, strong pain relief, and medication  to treat the associated vomiting and diarrhoea that he had.

Baxter was hospitalised for nearly a week, but with intensive hospital and nutritional care from the nurses, after a few days he started to show signs of improvement and was able to go home. With a low fat diet, Baxter is now back to normal living his best life, enjoying walks, meeting other dogs, and playing with Laura’s 5 year old son.
